Heavy storms and flooding in central and southern China have killed at least 17 people and injured hundreds. Heavy downpour caused flash flooding in Guangxi, where a breach of the reservoir spread water across several villages, and more than 130, 000 people had to be evacuated. In Hubei province, thunderstorms, tornadoes, and strong winds, together with the gale, caused 11 deaths and more than 330 people were wounded, and a lot of houses were damaged. Besides that, local authorities have alerted that flooding of a snake breeding establishment has resulted in up to 900 snakes being on the loose, which has further raised safety concerns among the locals. The Chinese government has initiated major rescue efforts when the meteorologists forecast that additional severe rains will mostly affect Guangxi, Guangdong, and Hubei provinces. On the other hand, Taiwan is getting the preparations done before the arrival of Super Typhoon Bavi, which is expected later this week. This calamity story is a sign of how the extreme weather conditions are becoming more frequent and powerful in East Asia.
