European leaders met in Ankara, Turkey, to attend the NATO summit as the alliance is confronted with increased security threats, as well as the changing division of duties. Since U.S. President Donald Trump is pressuring European allies to be more responsible for their own defense, the members of NATO are striving to implement a fresh concept whereby Europe would play the main role in the continent's conventional security. The Trump administration has started to cut back on U.S. military presence in Europe in order to adapt to the situation in the Middle East and the Indo-Pacific regions. This has resulted in European countries accelerating the development of their own defense systems. Besides, NATO chiefs will probably confirm one more time their willingness to stand by Ukraine as European members have decided to provide $80 billion in military aid over two years. This is due to increasing concerns about the ongoing assaults by Russia and other threats to regional security. (The New York Times, July 7, 2026)
