Hantavirus, a rodent-borne virus known for its various disease syndromes, has been in the limelight recently for an outbreak causing deaths, notably on a cruise ship. Experts on pathology and the virus claim that this strain of Hantavirus, the Andes strain, is the only known strain to be able to transfer from human to human, and even that is rare. However, rare does not mean harmless, and Hantavirus does have a relatively high mortality rate of anywhere between 1% to 35%, depending on the strain. In the US, there have been a reported total of 890 cases since the first record in 1993, all of which have been imported internationally. Despite this, researchers and experts on the matter state that the likelihood of this round of Hantavirus being the next pandemic is very low, and people not on the quarantined ship should not be worried. Still, they advise that it is good to be cautious and to limit contact with rodents and their excrement as they are the primary vector for the spread of the virus.
