Seunghun Lee/ Atacama Showdown: Research and Renewables Clash
페이지 정보

본문
Across the scientific community, the Atacama Desert is considered as one of the best places to study astronomy. Due to its dry climate, dark skies, and high altitude, the desert is isolated from the light pollution that affects observatories around the world. Hence, many astronomers and scientists depend on this crucial location in Chile to carry out ground-based research initiatives. However, the Atacama may soon lose the special contributions it has to offer to science and space exploration. A Chilean private company has recently released plans to construct a renewable energy facility near the Paranal Observatory in the desert. The development of this facility will interfere with the “tranquility” of the desert, potentially preventing astronomers from collecting accurate data and observations. There is also a high likelihood of these effects being irreversible, causing the desert to permanently lose its unique position in the world of astronomical research. In response to the newly announced facility, renowned astronomers from around the world have expressed their concern to the Chilean government. Through an open letter, the diverse array of accomplished scientists emphasized the consequences this facility would have on both domestic and international innovation. On the other hand, the company has claimed that the renewable energy facility will complement the observatory and strictly adhere to light pollution laws from the government. As an increasing number of figures continue to protest the new facility, this issue demonstrates how two “goods” in society – scientific innovation and renewable resources – can still conflict.
