Simon Stiell, executive secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), opened COP30 by warning that governments failing to pursue a rapid transition from fossil fuels would pay a heavy price—both domestically and globally. He cautioned that faltering in emissions cuts and climate finance would mean nations are blamed for resulting famine, conflict and economic stagnation. Despite global temperatures briefly surpassing the 1.5 °C threshold, Stiell stressed it’s still possible to reverse the trend—with methane cuts and clean energy—if urgent action and scaled-up funding for vulnerable countries are mobilized.
